EXPERIENCES

Life on the Delta

Every day at Okavango Villa is different. Every morning brings a new scene across the floodplains.

Okavango Villa is not a structured tour operation. It is your private home base for exploring one of Africa’s last true wilderness areas. Use the boat, take the mokoro, walk the paths, or simply sit on the deck and watch the world move at the pace of nature.

FISHING

The Okavango Panhandle is one of Africa’s premier freshwater fishing destinations. Cast for the legendary tigerfish or target a variety of other species while exploring the Delta’s tranquil channels and waterways. Whether you’re an experienced angler or a first-time fisherman, the combination of exciting fishing and spectacular scenery makes for an unforgettable experience.

Helicopter Horizons

30 Min Doors-Off Scenic Flight. Lift off from The Heliport, just 70km south of the Namibian Mohembo border, for a unique perspective of the Okavango Panhandle. This 30-minute flight offers a snapshot of the Delta’s permanent waterways, where papyrus channels wind through shimmering wetlands, giving you a taste of one of Botswana’s most unique ecosystems. With the doors removed, you’re guaranteed unobstructed views and photographic opportunities. Headsets are provided for constant communication with your knowledgeable pilot. Notes: Pricing works on a sliding scale depending on the number of guests flying. 2027 rates may vary.

Sunset Boat Cruises

Board the villa’s private boat and head upstream as the sun drops toward the Namibian border. Sundowners on the water, surrounded by birdsong and the silhouettes of fig trees against an African sky. This is the Okavango at its most magical.

Birdwatching

The Okavango Delta is a globally recognised Important Bird Area. From the deck alone you may spot African fish eagle, saddle-billed stork, malachite kingfisher, and countless weavers. Bring binoculars and a checklist, you will fill it fast.

Mahango Game Reserve Day Trip

Just across the border in Namibia, Mahango Game Reserve is one of the most underrated reserves in southern Africa. Buffalo, sable antelope, roan, elephant, and lion call it home. A short drive from the villa makes for a full and memorable day.

Stargazing and Bush Nights

Far from any city, the night sky above Mohembo West is extraordinary. Gather at the boma around the fire, listen to the sounds of the delta after dark, the splash of a hippo, the call of a nightjar, and look up at the Milky Way in full. Unforgettable.

Mokoro Excursions

Glide silently through papyrus channels in a traditional dugout canoe (mokoro), guided by a local poler who has navigated these waterways since childhood. The delta reveals itself differently from water level, a world of lilies, herons, and hidden life.

Visiting Tsodilo Hills

Journey to one of Africa’s most sacred sites, the Tsodilo Hills, a UNESCO World Heritage Site rising from the Kalahari. Home to over 4,500 ancient San rock paintings spanning thousands of years, these hills carry immense spiritual significance. Walk among the rocks, hear the legends of the Bushmen, and witness art that has endured millennia.

Wild Camping and Island Picnics

Venture deep into the Okavango Delta for a remote island picnic or overnight wild camp. Settle on a papyrus island as the sun sets over the floodplains, share a meal prepared in the bush, and fall asleep to the sounds of the African night. A raw, intimate encounter with the delta at its most pristine.
